Creativity and Intuition

Creativity: “the use of imagination or original ideas to create something” (Oxford Dictionary)
Intuition: “the ability to understand something instinctively, without the need for conscious reasoning” (Oxford Dictionary)
A study focusing on car purchasing found that individuals who purchased cars with a less period of time and out of intuition were satisfied 60% of the time whilst individuals who had greater time to think and analyze were only satisfied 25% of the time. Isn’t that shocking? It all has to do with our subconscious mind, our intuition. The human brain has two parts, right and left. There are abundant studies to show the right brain (associated with intuition) is far better than the left, associated with analyzing and logic (watch the TEDTalk below to learn more). I find that super amusing because the right brain is associated with creativity. The connection between intuition and creativity has recently peaked my interest as I watched a video on Instagram about women using their intuition. Studies have found women to be more intuitive than men, and women who tap into this intuition are more creative. Not only that, I read an article on The Creativity Post about “Intuition as the Basis for Creativity” and I found this quote to be a great summation of the article: “even conscientiousness will be inefficient and subject to dullness without creativity, and creativity does its best work when it functions intuitively” (Carla Woolf).
So how does one gain intuition and how’s it the basis for creativity? Intuition is all based on experience. For example, a young child touches something hot and burns themself will realize not to do that again because of experience, it’s not because they know it’s hot. The concept of hot and cold is learned later in life, but the experience is truly what prevents a child from touching the same hot mug again. Intuition grows like a muscle, it’s trained. With more experience, it becomes better at judging situations and taking fast decisions. Employers who have experience for years know how to choose between two employees with the same set of skills and experience. It’s this experience which is a recollection of emotions that bases our gut feelings in the future when exposed to the same situation again. Intuition is based off emotion. How does it connect to creativity? When an individual is more intuitive, they’re more likely to take unique chances and allow their subconscious thinking to take over. This subconscious thinking is such a beautiful way to reconnect an individual to themselves keeping them self aware of emotions. These emotions are better brought into the creative space when intuition is there. The creative space blossoms because of this power of intuition, which allows one to be honest to themselves and explore deeper experiences and meanings. The energy of intuition is channeled through creativity in the many abundant forms.
I find this absolutely mesmerizing about the human mind.
